Hello, my name is Dr. Thomas Knackstedt, and I’m a board-certified dermatologist at Peak Skin Center. In this video, I want to talk a little bit about seborrheic dermatitis.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a very common inflammatory skin condition that causes redness, flaking, and itching in areas that tend to be oilier. It often affects the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose, the beard area, and behind the ears. On the scalp it can look like dandruff, and on the face it can cause pink or red patches with greasy or white scale. It is not contagious, and it is not caused by poor hygiene.
Seborrheic dermatitis is thought to be related to a combination of skin inflammation and an overreaction to a normal yeast that lives on the skin, along with individual factors like skin type, stress, illness, and weather changes. Many people notice flares in colder months or during stressful periods.
Treatment is usually straightforward and focuses on reducing yeast levels and calming inflammation. For the scalp, medicated shampoos can be very helpful, including antifungal shampoos and other dandruff shampoos, used a few times a week and left on for several minutes before rinsing. For the face and ears, prescription antifungal creams or washes can reduce flares, and short courses of anti-inflammatory medications like topical steroids may be used to relieve redness and itching. Gentle skin care, avoiding harsh scrubs, and using a light, fragrance-free moisturizer can also improve comfort.
Seborrheic dermatitis often comes and goes, so consistent maintenance is usually the key to staying ahead of it. I hope this overview is useful, and thank you for watching.
