Hi, this is Dr. Thomas Knackstedt. I’m a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at Peak Skin Center. In this video, I want to answer a question that I’m commonly asked by patients, which is about the relationship between basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
Patients often ask whether one type of skin cancer can progress into another. For example, if a squamous cell cancer is left untreated, will it eventually turn into melanoma? To answer that question, it helps to take a step back.
Any cell in the body has the potential to become cancerous, and that means any cell in the skin can develop into a skin cancer. However, different types of cells do so at different frequencies. The most common skin cancers arise from what I often call the “brick and mortar” cells of the skin—the cells that make up the outer lining of the skin. These cells give rise to basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. While there are differences between these two cancers, they originate from fairly similar types of skin cells.
Melanoma, on the other hand, comes from a completely different type of cell. It originates from melanocytes, which are specialized pigment-producing cells in the skin. In their healthy state, melanocytes produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color and tanning. When melanocytes cluster together, they form freckles or moles. When these pigment-producing cells become cancerous, the result is melanoma.
Because basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma arise from different cells of origin, one type does not turn into another. Each cancer type remains distinct and behaves according to the biology of the cell it came from.
