Hello, my name is Dr. Thomas Knackstedt, and I’m a board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon at Peak Skin Center. In this video, I want to talk a little bit about earlobe repair for stretched or torn earlobes.
Earlobes can stretch over time from heavy earrings or gauges, and they can also tear partially or completely from sudden pulling or long-term thinning of the piercing tract. Many people seek repair because the earlobe looks uneven, earrings no longer sit correctly, or there is concern about the tear progressing.
Earlobe repair is an in-office procedure done with local anesthesia. The basic idea is to remove the thin, stretched skin along the tear or elongated piercing tract, then carefully reshape the earlobe and close it with fine sutures so it heals with a smooth contour
Recovery is usually straightforward. There is mild swelling and tenderness for a few days, and sutures are typically removed within about a week, depending on the closure technique. Patients are generally advised to keep the area clean, avoid sleeping directly on the repair, and avoid tension or pulling on the lobe while it heals. Scar maturation continues over several weeks to months, and most scars fade nicely over time.
Re-piercing is often possible after healing, usually several weeks to a few months later.
I hope this information is helpful, and thank you for watching.
