Hello, my name is Dr. Thomas Knackstedt, and I’m a board-certified dermatologist and board-certified, fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon at Peak Skin Center. In this video, I want to talk a little bit about Fraxel, which is a type of fractional laser resurfacing.
Fraxel Dual is often described as a non-ablative fractional laser, meaning it treats the skin in a pixelated pattern of tiny microscopic treatment zones while leaving surrounding skin intact to speed healing. This controlled injury triggers the body’s repair response and stimulates collagen remodeling, which is why Fraxel can improve sun damage, uneven texture and tone, fine lines, and certain types of acne scarring and surgical scars. It is also commonly used to improve crepey texture around the eyes and eyelids in selected patients.
In practical terms, each session treats only a portion of the skin, so results are typically built through a series. Many patients do about 3 to 5 treatments, spaced roughly every 3 to 8 weeks, depending on the area and the goal. Fraxel is generally not the best choice if the main issue is facial redness or significant skin laxity, and deeper problems can sometimes be better suited to other resurfacing options, such as fractional CO2 lasers.
Here is what a typical treatment day looks like. The skin is cleansed, and a topical numbing cream is applied and allowed to take effect for about an hour. The treatment itself is usually around an hour for a full face, and most patients describe a mild to moderate “pins and needles” sensation.
Recovery is usually very manageable. The first day can feel like a mild sunburn. Redness is common right after treatment and typically settles over the next few days, and many people are back to normal routines, including work and makeup, within a short window. Over the next several days, a temporary “bronzed” look and mild flaking can occur as older, sun-damaged pigment and surface cells are replaced.
Many patients notice early improvements in smoothness and overall glow within about a week, but the deeper benefits continue to build as collagen remodels over the following months, which is why the full result is best judged after the series is complete. With good sun protection, some patients choose periodic maintenance treatments to help sustain results.
I hope this explanation is helpful, and thank you for watching.
