Hello, my name is Dr. Thomas Knackstedt, and I’m a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist at Peak Skin Center. In this video, I want to talk a little bit about stretch marks, and how they can be treated with Fraxel laser.
Stretch marks, also called striae, form when the skin stretches faster than the underlying support structure can adapt. That stretching can create tiny tears in the dermis, which is the deeper layer of skin that contains collagen and elastin. Early stretch marks are often pink, red, or purple, and over time they typically fade to a lighter, silvery color and can look slightly indented. Stretch marks are extremely common and can occur with pregnancy, growth spurts, bodybuilding or rapid muscle gain, and weight changes. Genetics and hormonal factors can also play a role, which is why some people develop stretch marks more easily than others.
Fraxel is a fractional laser, which means it treats a “fraction” of the skin at a time by creating microscopic columns of controlled injury while leaving surrounding skin intact. For stretch marks, the goal is to stimulate new collagen and remodel the dermis, which can improve texture, help blend color differences, and soften the appearance of the lines. Because untreated skin remains between the microscopic treatment zones, healing is faster than with older fully ablative resurfacing approaches.
Recovery after Fraxel for stretch marks usually involves redness, mild swelling, and a sunburn-like sensation for the first day or two, followed by dryness and light flaking for several days as the skin repairs. Most people can return to normal activities quickly, but consistent moisturizing and sun protection are important during the healing phase.
Treatment is typically done as a series. Many patients benefit from about three to five sessions, spaced roughly four to six weeks apart, although the exact number depends on the location, skin type, and whether the stretch marks are newer or more mature. Improvement is gradual as collagen remodels over the weeks following each session.
I hope this overview is useful, and thanks for watching.
