Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are incredibly common and incredibly frustrating. Whether they appeared during a growth spurt, pregnancy, weight change, or after building muscle, many people feel self-conscious about the lines left behind. At Peak Skin Center, we help patients understand what stretch marks are, why they form, and what can realistically be done to improve their appearance using evidence-based dermatologic treatments.

Stretch marks (also called striae) are a type of scar that forms when the skin stretches or shrinks quickly. This sudden change causes microscopic tears in the deeper layer of the skin (the dermis). As these tiny injuries heal, they leave behind streaks that start out red, purple, or pink and eventually fade to white or silvery lines.

Common triggers include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Growth spurts during puberty
  • Rapid weight gain or loss
  • Rapid muscle growth from strength training
  • Certain medications (such as long-term use of oral or topical steroids)
  • Some medical or hormonal conditions

Genetics also play a role. Some people are simply more prone to stretch marks than others, even when exposed to similar triggers.

Stretch marks are not harmful to your health, but they can have a real impact on how comfortable you feel in your own skin. Many patients tell us they avoid certain clothes, swimsuits, or activities because of them. Our goal is to address not only the biology of stretch marks, but also the emotional impact.

There is no treatment that completely erases stretch marks, but there are several proven options that can significantly improve their color and texture. At Peak Skin Center, we start with a careful skin evaluation and discussion of your goals, then create a customized plan. Treatment options may include:

Prescription-strength topical retinoids (derived from vitamin A) can help remodel collagen over time and improve the appearance of newer stretch marks that are still red or purple. These are not appropriate for pregnancy or breastfeeding, but they can be very useful in other settings when used correctly and consistently. Other topical products may be recommended to support skin health and complement in-office procedures.

Laser therapy is one of the most effective approaches for stretch marks. Different types of lasers target different aspects:

  • Vascular or redness-targeting lasers can help fade red or purple stretch marks by closing down excess blood vessels in the area.
  • Fractional resurfacing lasers create controlled micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate new collagen and elastin, which can soften texture and blend the stretch marks more smoothly into the surrounding skin.

Your dermatologist will select the type of laser based on your skin type, the age and color of the stretch marks, and the area of the body being treated.

Microneedling uses fine, controlled needles to create tiny channels in the skin. This triggers the body’s natural wound-healing response and encourages new collagen production. Over a series of treatments, microneedling can help stretch marks appear more shallow and less noticeable. In some cases, microneedling may be combined with topical serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for added benefit.

Because stretch marks affect both color and texture, combination treatment is often the most effective. For example, a patient might start with a laser to reduce redness, then follow with fractional laser or microneedling sessions to improve texture and depth. At Peak Skin Center, we’ll help you understand the rationale for each step so you feel informed and confident in your plan.

Recovery from stretch mark treatments can vary based on the specific procedure, your skin type, and the area being treated, but most are well-tolerated with minimal downtime.

After laser or microneedling, you may notice temporary redness, mild swelling, or a sensation similar to a sunburn for a day or two. Some treatments can cause light flaking or bronzing as the skin renews. We provide detailed aftercare instructions, including how to cleanse, moisturize, and protect the treated area. Sun protection is especially important, as UV exposure can interfere with healing and pigment blending.

Results develop gradually as your skin produces new collagen and elastic tissue. Most patients see the best improvement with a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart. While stretch marks cannot be completely removed, they can often be made significantly less visible—so that they blend more naturally with the surrounding skin and are much less noticeable in everyday life.
